The Australian Bureau of Statistics is starting to release information regarding the 2026 census.

Important points:

  • Census night is Tuesday 11th August 2026
  • Census papers will be sent by mail, with the option to complete in paper or online
  • As an alternative, the census can be completed via MyGov, but they must register and the window to do so is short (approx 3 week window in May/June)
  • Reformulated and new questions around Gender and Sexual orientation, which have been developed in consultation with LGBQTIA+ community
  • ABS is seeking Field Managers (now) and Field Officers (from April) – https://info.census.abs.gov.au/careers
  • ABS will have Pop up hubs in some local communities (potentially libraries, but – no details at this stage)
  • First Data from the census will be released in June 2027, with further releases then October 2027 and into 2028
  • New ABS DataMaps functionality and enhancements on QuickStats and TableBuilder.
