Mirka Lane, Shane Warne Stand, Caroline Springs, Nino Arrigo Bridge and Warrior Woman Lane are all examples of places named after Victorians. As Victoria’s cities, suburbs, towns and regions continue to grow, we’ll need to name more places including new streets, parks, community facilities and buildings.
Over the next 3 years there will be more than 6,000 new places to name in Victoria. Geographic Names Victoria want to make sure these names recognise the people who helped make communities thriving places. All Victorians are invited to nominate someone who has made a significant contribution to be considered for a new place name, particularly individuals from under-represented groups including women, First Peoples and multicultural communities. Nominations will be added to a council name bank, to be considered when places need naming. Remember a local, name a place!
How can libraries get involved?
Libraries can get involved in the following ways:
- Make a nomination – consider whether there are people from your community’s history who could be commemorated in a new place name.
- Share the campaign within your local community.
- Download the Name a Place stakeholder pack for campaign posters and other media assets
