25 July 2023 is World Drowning Prevention Day

Drowning has caused over 2.5 million deaths in the last decade, including 53 Victorians in the 2021–22 year.  This World Drowning Prevention Day, Life Saving Victoria (LSV) are joining the World Health Organisation and urging Victorian’s ‘to do one thing’ to stop these preventable deaths.

Libraries are valuable resources reaching communities directly and we would love for you to be involved by:

  • Connecting with your local aquatic centres.
  • Booking an LSV Lifeguard for story-time on the day – contact [email protected].
  • Displaying books with water safety messages and those that promote the benefits of enjoying waterways.
  • Providing activity and colouring sheets to your visitors, local kindergartens and schools.
  • Contacting LSV or tagging us on social media (#DrowningPrevention & @lifesavingvic) and letting us know what you’re doing within your community.

LSV has a range of classroom-based water safety resources including Videos (Water Safety Watch & Learn) and some wonderful colouring sheets/ worksheets (Dry Water Safety Activities) to download and use within your library.

We’ve also put together a few suggestions for your book displays. We know you’re the experts here though and we’d love to hear from you about other stories we can add to the list: World Drowning Prevention Day Suggested Reading and Activities.
