Wangaratta Library’s Reading Portraits, in partnership with photographer Marc Bongers, presents a collection of images that depict individual’s connection to books, stories, reading and their local library. It has been accepted in the Ballarat International Foto Biennale 2023 as part of the open program.

Funded through a Libraries for Health and Wellbeing Grant from SLV, this project attempts to recognise the key role that public libraries have in supporting the health and wellbeing of the local community. The stories that the individuals have chosen to pose with are deeply personal and illustrate how books and libraries can help shape people’s lives by having a positive impact in the areas of physical health, mental wellbeing, and social connection.

Reading Portraits is currently on display in the windows of Collins Booksellers Ballarat on Lydiard and can be viewed until 22 October 2023.  Reading Portraits | Ballarat International Foto Biennale (ballaratfoto.org)
