The Local Word – Regional Showcase is a new literary event for writers and readers, taking place on Friday 18 and Saturday 19 November 2022 at the Geelong Library & Heritage Centre and several libraries around south-western Victoria.

Presented by Geelong Regional Libraries, the program includes 13 different writers’ workshops, panel discussions and author talks taking place across the two days. With sessions designed for established, emerging and aspiring writers, many will also interest readers and book lovers alike. All of the authors featured in the program are local creatives from the Greater Geelong region and the author events will be supported by Torquay Bookshop with opportunities for book signings.

On Friday there will be six writers’ workshops held at libraries throughout the region, with various topics including: Social Media for Authors with Fiona Lowe and Embracing Songwriting with Hands-On Techniques with local musicians Claudia Collins, Mike Whittle and Mathilda Garrido Lucay and Discover Your Global Indigenous Voice with Carol Hullin.

On Saturday at the Geelong Library & Heritage Centre there will be two panel discussions: Not About Us Without Us, discussing First Nations representation with Aunty Fay Muir, Aunty Edith Wright and Corrina Eccles, chaired by Sue Lawson and Writing for Resilience in Children and Adults, discussing how books can foster resilience and emotional intelligence in adults and children with Heather Gallagher and Stef Gemmill and chaired by Sally Learey.

There will also be two author in-conversations: The Creative Path to Publishing with a stellar group of 2022 publishing fiction authors: Ellie O’Neill, D.L. Hicks and Miranda Luby, facilitated by Abigayle Carmody and Words are Eagles – Writing on the Nature and Language of Place, with author Gregory Day in conversation with David McCooey.

The showcase will conclude with the Evening Anthology, an opportunity to come together with fellow writers and readers to socialise and connect, and hear performances from musician Riordan and poetry from Deakin University students.

Tickets are on sale now: www.grlc.vic.gov.au/localword , priced from $10 to $30 for the workshops.

The Local Word – Regional Showcase is supported by principal sponsor Deakin University and the City of Greater Geelong through its Creative Communities Grant Program, in collaboration with Geelong Regional Libraries.
