We have been engaged by some public libraries in South Australia to develop a Gaming in Libraries Framework. While recognising that there are many types of gaming, many audiences and many potential applications in learning and fun, the focus of the Framework is (at this stage) on digital/online gaming for children and young adults (approx. 12-25 years). The Framework is intended for use across the SA library network and will have 2 key components.

  • The first will outline the ‘fit’ for gaming within library collections, programs and spaces. This will examine the benefits of gaming activities in libraries for players and communities, and present the case for investment in gaming resources/equipment/activities alongside other investment in library resources.
  • The second will be a ‘How to’ section. ‘How to’ get started for those who have not yet dipped their toes in the water through to ‘How to’ set up and run a gaming tournament at your library, or between libraries.

It is expected that the Framework will be completed and published in the 3rd quarter of 2024.

We have already started to reach out to a few Victorian libraries we know that have been active in the gaming space. If there is any experience or advice that librarians in the Victorian public library sector can share with us your SA colleagues will be very appreciative.
