The Rainbow Libraries project was formulated in response to a perceived need for information and training to support public library staff in welcoming LGBTQIA+ parented families (‘rainbow families”) into public libraries. This includes offering inclusive programming, space markers and collection management to meet the needs of rainbow families across Victoria. This need has only been heightened by a marked increase in anti-LGBTQIA+ protests in recent years, particularly those levelled at public libraries and family programs.

This project is being undertaken with the support of Public Libraries Victoria, and will be a collaborative project coordinated through PLV’s Special Interest Groups structure.

What are the objectives?
• An increase in awareness and inclusion of rainbow families among public libraries in Victoria.
• An increase in self-reported competence and confidence among public library staff, particularly Children’s and Youth Services staff, around engaging with and welcoming rainbow families.
• An increase in positive associations with public libraries among rainbow families across Victoria.

This survey represents the first phase of our Rainbow Libraries Project. We want this project to meet the needs of our sector, and so we want to hear from library staff across Victoria (particularly within CYS) about your experiences, concerns and successes! Please feel free to share this survey with colleagues!
