Do you have skills that could enhance your local library? Why not volunteer?

Volunteers help make library services even better by extending the service that we provide to our communities.

It’s rewarding for volunteers, too. It feels good to make a difference. It is also a great way to keep your skills up to date, learn new skills and meet new people.

What do volunteers do?

Across Victoria, libraries are looking for volunteers who can do all sorts of things! Volunteers are often needed to:

  • Welcome people and provide directions
  • Support busy borrowing sessions at the Toy Library or Tool Library
  • Return books and restack shelves
  • Organise loans between libraries
  • Choose and deliver books for people who are unable to visit the library in person
  • Help with activities and events
  • Help a community member improve their English

This is just a snapshot of the ways that you could help. Every library is different and will have a variety of opportunities for volunteers to pursue.

How can I get involved?

If you would like to volunteer, contact your local library directly to see how you can help, or visit www.volunteer.com.au to explore all of the available opportunities.

PLV supports the Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA) policy about how to work with volunteers. You can read the statement here.
