Library staff are invited to read, discuss, customise and implement the newly launched ALIA Code of Ethics for the Australian LIS Workforce. (ALIA Code of Ethics). This Australian first set of ethical principles is designed to guide and support people in the library and information sector in their decision making and behaviour.
The ALIA Code of Ethics has been developed by ALIA in response to requests from the sector for an ethical framework that is adapted to the Australian context, including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander priorities and responsibilities that are unique to this country and its communities.
What does it include?
The Code of Ethics encompasses eight ethical clauses – each with its own introductory and background information, references and supporting documentation – and is embedded in the ALIA Skills, Knowledge and Ethics Framework. It was developed through wide consultation with the sector together with reference to the ethical frameworks and statements of partner organisations around the world.
Who is it for?
Anyone working in and across library and information services can use the Code of Ethics, whether or not they hold library and information qualifications, or hold management, front-of-house or behind-the-scenes positions.
How can I use it?
There are a variety of resources on the website, including a long form Code of Ethics, with a preamble and references, and a short form, which contains just the Code of Ethics. The hope is that sectors and organisations will customise the ALIA Code of Ethics to their own situation by creating action examples that are relevant to their specific circumstances. To assist, a fillable Code of Ethics is also available. All of the resources can be found at the bottom of the Code of Ethics main page.
The Code of Ethics will help orientate people joining from others or other countries, and help to articulate a commitment to ethical principles that underpin professional practice and identity.
How was it developed?
Taking inspiration from the IFLA international Code of Ethics, a public consultation received feedback from ALIA members, individuals and institutions. Input was also provided by the ALIA Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Expert Advisory Group and LIS Workforce Advisory Board, before being formally endorsed by the ALIA Board.
